Art Basel Miami 2017

This weekend brought the annual Art Basel activities to Miami and Miami Beach. I attended for the second time, checking out the fairs, the murals in Wynwood, the parties with free liquor, ran into some familiar faces, and as always in Miami, attempted to eat as much Cuban food as possible. I left exhausted, but I’ll probably still return next year.

The Mermaid Parade at Coney Island

It rained on our parade, but mermaids are meant to be in the water. The 35th annual Mermaid Parade opened with a downpour, but that didn’t stop the party. I captured some of the overcast activity around the boardwalk as well as the Coney Art Walls. Politics played a heavier role this year, with several costumes and characters taking aim at the Trump administration. Joining me were Christie, Stephanie, Maurice, and Sonya +1.

The 8th Annual Welling Court Mural Project

The summer street art events don’t stop. This Saturday was the 8th annual block party for the Welling Court Mural Project, bringing its yearly cycle of murals to the small neighborhood in Astoria, Queens. I was joined by fashion designer Sharufa Walker who brought her colorful style to a few of the colorful walls.

The Bushwick Collective Block Party 2017

Despite the mostly dreary weather in NYC, summer has crept upon us. This means a lot of events to showcase. The Bushwick Collective held its 6th annual block party this weekend, featuring new work from graffiti and street artists, as well as performances from Dipset and other hip-hop artists. I spent the day with familiar faces and making new friends. Thanks to The Stylish Flaneuse for getting the shot of me in the last photo.

Art Basel is something I always told myself I would do, but this was my first year actually attending. While I didn’t make it to the actual fair in Miami Beach, I visited a few of the satellite fairs and spent a lot of time in the Wynwood arts district. Shout out to Keisha who joined me at the Wynwood Walls. The street art scene in Wynwood is overwhelming, with graffiti and murals just about everywhere you look. I’ll have to make another trip just to capture everything. Good times. Maybe next I can go to Art Basel in… Basel, Switzerland.

Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade and Art Walls

The 34th annual Mermaid Parade took place in Coney Island this weekend. Like all parades, getting a good view can be a bit hectic. Luckily, there was enough action to catch in the surrounding area.

Coney Art Walls is a public art project curated by Jeffery Deitch. Running in its second year, it features a good collection of street artists and muralists. The parade afterparty provided a nice opportunity to catch mermaids in front of artistic backdrops. Shout out to Sonya, Stephanie, Christie, and everyone I photographed.

The 7th Annual Welling Court Mural Project

The Welling Court Mural Project started in 2009 when the small community in Astoria, Queens asked Ad Hoc Art gallery to bring public art to the neighborhood. It has since become one of the best spots for street art in the city, with a public gathering happening yearly. I attended the block party Saturday, along with fashion blogger Debbie Ruiz who was my model for the day.

The Bushwick Collective Block Party 2016

The Bushwick Collective block party took place this Saturday, celebrating 5 years as an outdoor gallery showcasing some of the best street art in the city. It was a day filled with live art, vendor markets, and live performances from hip-hop artists such as Statik Selektah, Joell Ortiz, and Jadakiss. I was there to capture the art and activities. Thanks to everyone I met who let me take their picture in front of these murals.

Bushwick Natives at the 83rd Precinct

A police precinct is an interesting place for a street art project. Is it a trap? Should we be suspicious? Anyway, Brooklyn’s 83rd Precinct teamed up with Spread Art NYC to produce a community wall featuring portraits of famous Bushwick natives. Four artists have contributed. Maybe we’ll see more in the future.
